HALF LIFE OR STILL LIFE

'How & why we should be questioning the approach to UK's contingent nuclear energy policy'

The paper 'Half Life or Still Life?' (Nov 04) outlined a range of reasons why maintaining a meaningful and inclusive evaluation about Britain's current and potential nuclear energy options is important. It suggests that the risks and influences affecting the UK energy market (as well as the government's own energy and environment strategy) have become more volatile and less predictable since the Energy White Paper was published in February 2003.

A thorough, rolling assessment of the UK's existing and contingent nuclear options is therefore an appropriate and precautionary measure. Indeed, the government's stated position is to maintain an open mind with regard to nuclear's role in the energy mix.

The paper asks whether the government is taking sufficient responsibility for this issue, and if nuclear energy is indeed to remain a practicable, contingent option for the future, what additional analysis and steps (if any) might be required?

The project concept was discussed at multi-stakeholder workshop on Dec 03 with over 100 delegates (see recent events).
