Nuclear Power : Risks & Future Governance
The Canadian High Commission - 21 April 2005
The first conference in the 'Half Life or Still Life' series took place at the Canadian High Commission on 21st April 2005 with a broad spectrum of high level international speakers and an invitation audience of 100.
The event explored the influence & context of certain risks that would be associated with any potential, future UK civil nuclear power projects and the decision-making process behind them. It argued the case for an open, 'mutual trust' approach to nuclear risk governance that acknowledges the limitations of and uncertainties in science, and which attributes values to social perspectives and qualitative judgments of risks. Key themes included:
- Risk Governance models: nuclear & the 'Mutual Trust' paradigm.
- The context of proliferation & civil nuclear security.
- Physical Risks: Probability Risk Assessments in North America.
- Public liability, underwriting risk: quantifying and qualifying risk.
